New Case Study Examines Artistic Milliners’ Business Model

A new case study called “Artistic Milliners’ Sustainable Approach: Automation, Innovation, People, and Planet” highlights the vertically integrated denim manufacturer’s sustainability-driven business model. The case study showcases the company’s ability to scale in size, volume, and profitability while remaining steadfast in its commitment to the well-being of future generations.

Sponsored by the UN Global Compact Network Pakistan, the report examines how Artistic Millner’s (AM) multi-prong approach to delivering “sustainability through responsibility” is carried out across the family-owned business. These actions include responsible water management, energy consumption, waste heat recovery, decarbonization, health, safety and environment, and the Milliner Cotton Initiative in collaboration with WWF Pakistan.

“The passion for innovation and creativity allows the company to cultivate curiosity and inspire new ways of collaboration with clients and thought leaders worldwide,” the UN Global Compact Network Pakistan states in the study.

It goes into detail about how AM addresses several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AM’s inclusive approach to recruitment, training and promotions at all levels of the company supports SDG 5, Gender Equality. The study reports that women constitute more than a quarter of the total workforce and half of leadership positions, which are higher than the industry employment average in Pakistan.

AM’s work with Fair Trade and Better Work contribute to SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth. The study reports that AM has dispersed $2 million to workers through the Fairtrade program. The mill’s uses of organic and recycled materials, water and energy-reducing technologies and zero discharge of hazardous chemicals in denim processing supports SDG 15, Life on Land.

Beyond its Karachi-based facilities’ doors, AM engages with local communities. The case study highlights AM’s flood relief efforts in wake of the devastating rains and floods in Sindh and Baluchistan in 2022, seed bag distributions to support local farmers and maximize production of organic cotton and its partnership with Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Center to organize opportunities for health services.

Additionally, the study outlines AM’s way forward driven by sustainability targets. Goals include achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030 by enhancing recycling, reusing materials, and utilizing waste-to-energy options, and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040 by setting Science-Based Targets aligned with the 1.5°C pathway. AM aims to reduce water consumption per unit by 30 percent by 2025 through water-efficient technologies and practices.

These efforts and more provide the framework to a sustainability-focused business that “realizes economic success through an ethically designed business model” for people and the environment, the study concludes.
