Global Synthetic Price Decline Slows in May

Global synthetic prices fell last month by the smallest amount since February, according to data released by consulting firm PCI Fibres. The global synthetic fiber price index, which tracks the weighted average price for acrylic, nylon, polyester and polypropylene filament yarns and staple fibers, fell 3.9% compared to a year ago, less than April’s drop but its nineteenth straight month of decline.

Prices fell in all three key regions of the world. In Asia, the index decreased by an average of 3.9% compared to the same month last year. Asian prices remain 18% below the world average.

The European index fell by 6.5%, less than April’s drop. European synthetic prices are about 17% above the world average.

The US index fell by only 1.7%, its third decrease in six months, though US prices remain 45% above than the world average.
