Selena Gomez shined at the Chanel-sponsored Academy Women’s Luncheon on Dec. 10, and, in an ode to the brand, wore a head-to-toe look from the French fashion house. Indeed, no detail was amiss: Besides appearing in a Chanel tweed skirt suit, which Gomez’s stylist Erin Walsh artfully paired with black tights and Mary Jane platforms, the Rare Beauty founder also sported a bare manicure that had us obsessed from the moment we saw it. After careful digging, we’ve identified the iconic culprit. It’s Chanel’s Le Vernis polish, in the #111 Ballerina shade.
Gomez has an all-star glam team behind her, including nail artist Tom Bachik who, in a recent Instagram post, revealed that the star’s manicure for the event was powered by the aforementioned Chanel hue. Given the fact that it’s both subtle and classic, the polish fit seamlessly with Gomez’s overall timeless, black-and-white outfit. Bachik also knew what he was doing when it came to manicure trends: After all, bare manis have had a colloquial chokehold on the public for some time now.

Summer 2024 saw the bare manicure trend truly take off, with some TikTok beauty influencers calling it the ultimate “no-makeup makeup look” for your nails. Interpreted either to mean skipping all color in favor of a simple, glossy top coat or else keeping to a neutral color palette, it’s only natural that bare manis were all the rage that season. Who wouldn’t want easy-breezy beauty during the time of high temperatures and water-related activities? Now, Gomez is reinterpreting the trend for winter and thereby breaking the stereotype that a December polish must be some iteration of red or burgundy.
Choosing a soft pink versus a striking bordeaux polish is as strategic a choice as any. Think about it: The holiday season involves packing bags, bedazzling your tree with baubles, and kneading dough for sugar cookies. In all of these cases, a bright, festive polish is bound to get chipped — and the contrast between those bold colors and your natural nails is, unfortunately, quite noticeable. A sheer color, however, comes to the rescue as the ultimate low-maintenance alternative.
The Chanel Le Vernis Ballerina shade is an elevated take on a basic buff manicure — providing a glossy sheen that straddles the line between sophisticated and lighthearted. Though it holds a high concentration of pigments, it’s also buildable. What’s more, Le Vernis boasts naturally derived camellia eco-ceramides, which contribute to its ability of making dry, brittle nails look and feel healthier.
All this is to say: Whether you’re in need of a polish that rehabilitates your nails after years of consistent gel manis, want to break from the all-red mold of traditional holiday nail colors, or are on the hunt for a spot-on gift for her that will delight tricky-to-shop-for loved ones on your list this year, Chanel Le Vernis (in Ballerina, of course) is at your service.
