Uma Wang likes to tell stories through the fabrics. Here she excelled in a beautifully textured collection that was romantic but with an edge.
Wang mixed heritage Chinese references with an Art Deco mood as her base. Brassiere structures reined in the volumes on Wang’s signature long, loose gowns, exploring new attitudes that she described as the “new Chinese” way of dressing.
A Klimt-esque checkered gown was a standout, as were a run of antique-looking tea-stained silk gowns with Chinese collars with hand-painted black blossoms. The designer focused on total looks mixing the same fabric, moving from aged textures in earth tones to rich gleaming velvets in florals recalling Chinese paintings. Nerdy specs finished off the look.
A boyish spin came in an oversized men’s sweater in a gauzy knit with droopy sleeves, and big pockets accentuated the relaxed factor in a wardrobe that was romantic, dressy and comfortable at the same time.
