Rabih Kayrouz teamed up with French ballet dancer and choreographer Marie-Agnès Gillot for a performance showcasing his spring collection, which — not surprisingly — was all about movement.
To the tune of The Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning,” a group of dancers performed on a small stage in the space on Paris’ Left Bank that serves as the designer’s store, workshop and showroom, in front of an audience of editors packed onto small wooden benches.
The outfits gave them plenty of room to maneuver: Oversize shirts were paired with peasant skirts and extra-wide, split-leg pants, while shirtdresses enveloped the body in ample folds. The palette was condensed to mostly black, white and purple, as if to pare each look down to its essence.
Many of the ideas were born from his prior resort collection, namely split coats and puffy pants with drawstring waists. Kayrouz added a more decorative slant via fringing, which sprouted from a lemon-yellow dress, as well as skirts paired with boxy suit jackets. The fringe really came alive when Gillot emerged, twirling with fierce intensity in a dramatic black flamenco-style dress. Moments later, she reappeared in a sleeveless purple tent dress for an encore that ended with thunderous applause.
