Reem Acra took a modern approach to feminine florals this season. Known for her intricate and beautiful evening gowns, she switched gears for spring and offered plenty of very short cocktail dresses and an abundance of separates with a garden theme — and it was all ever so sweet. Silhouettes were voluminous as she tinkered with proportion, as in a peplum jacket with billowing sleeves and floral embroidery that she paired with skinny pants.
Acra manipulated layer upon layer of fabric, playing with texture, transparency and volume until they all worked together. She showed an array of little minidresses with lots of intricate details — from 3-D floral embroideries to ostrich-feather adornments — as well as jackets featuring peplums, puff sleeves and 3-D floral appliqués. Iridescent skinny pants, lace jackets and sculpted miniskirts were other key offerings.
But those who look to Acra for evening gowns won’t be disappointed; she showed a number of dramatic looks with the same embellishments and treatments as the shorter styles — most noteworthy a transparent pink tulle gown with embroidery. To tie into her garden theme, colors ranged from soft pastels to vibrant floral hues. She may have stepped out of her comfort zone, but ultimately Acra stayed refreshingly true to who she is as a designer.
