Every single detail was well thought out at Lela Rose’s spring show, which she staged as a sit-down lunch at Café Altro Paradiso: rosé, charcuterie, hand-embroidered napkins (done by Rose herself), take-home biscotti (also done by Rose) and straw fans as send-offs in the summer heat — you know, just in case.
It came as no surprise that the collection was a beautiful homage to the designer’s “heritage” elements. “It has this kind of reminiscent feel — not in the vintage sort of sense, but referring to who we are as a brand,” she explained.
It all started with a pleated gingham fabric, one of Rose’s signature patterns, which she did in a summery off-the-shoulder crisscrossed crop top and matching midi skirt as well as a shirtdress with a grosgrain belt. “We took from the color of it and did a green lace, just as we took from our poppy print and did a floral hand embroidery,” she noted, pointing to a pink halter gown with pretty appliqués on the bodice.
