Adam Selman’s collection has a giddy, intoxicating charisma. His muse is sweet and a little bit nasty, the girly-girl who’s not afraid to get down — look at the high-profile women he dresses — and his spring lineup suited that personality to a T. A few things formed the foundation of the lineup: party dresses, denim and workwear, crochet, and shirting that Selman kept fresh with unusual cuts and made fun with a few well-placed, charmingly smutty effects. A pajama shirt and boxers were done in a soft-core “lady” print of female silhouettes and not-so-innocent slipdresses hung from barely there spaghetti straps.
Selman showed his range for high and low, channeling the work of Plexiglas artist Aaronel deRoy Gruber into allover beading on a pale pink slipdress that will retail for around $3,000 and wrangling the inherently kitschy quality of colorful crotchet — a polo, skirt and cardigan — into something modern and affordable. Each piece will hover around $245. “I love the mix of a modern girl being able to do that,” said Selman, of splurging on a special luxury dress and buying something firmly within her realm of possibility from the same brand. Spoken like someone who’s dotting his creative Is and crossing his merchandising Ts.
