Marimekko made its debut at Paris Fashion Week with its first collection conceived completely under the creative direction of Anna Teurnell. The former H&M designer went back to the essence of the Finnish house, spotlighting patterns with an artisanal feel — many in monochrome versions that gave the outfits a stripped-down graphic appeal.
Teurnell was not afraid to mix and match, pairing a black-and-white polka dot shirt with pants in a psychedelic mélange of mustard, pink and red. Shirtdresses were printed with slightly irregular stripes, while an orange tunic with hand-painted navy swirls was accessorized with bubblegum pink boots. Elsewhere, she switched between muted shades of khaki, purple and navy, with pops of bright color.

Neutral essentials, such as a khaki parka and a perfectly proportioned beige trenchcoat, were slipped into the lineup as well. “We are a bit pragmatic, functional. It should be easy to wear, easy to understand. We also like more toned-down things,” Teurnell explained.
It was a judicious choice. The neutral elements only served to underscore the timeless appeal of Marimekko’s charmingly naïve fabric designs.
