“Trouble in Paradise” was the working title of Adam Andrascik’s sophomore effort for Guy Laroche, with the designer taking the notion of contrasts literally, as he walked an impossible line between happy Hawaiian prints and dark, military rigor.
Heavy chains were attached to leather miniskirts and high-waist denim pants. Tropical prints inspired by the Beach Boys era appeared on asymmetric tops — part uniform, part swimsuit — as well as military coats that in turn were adorned with shiny little palm trees. More heavily deconstructed ensembles — collaged from contrasting pieces of fabric — tested the limits of good taste.
Andrascik said he was conscious of the risk he was taking with his “twisted paradise,” as he called it. “Guy Laroche designed for the time period he lived in, and I feel today’s modernity is a little bit off, especially in Paris. People are drawn to the darker side. And it’s interesting how everyone just wants to channel the street, but doesn’t want to channel the dream,” he explained.
