Maria Cornejo wanted to make a clean sweep or, as she put it, “to start from a clean canvas and create something new,” for her Zero + Maria Cornejo spring collection. And she did exactly that — beautifully — giving it all a graceful Japanese feel. She began with custom fabric choices from which, she explained, every silhouette was created.
That process was visible in the way the bonded canvas and double-faced cotton coats folded and moved with the ease of a favorite old robe. They slid over matching, long dresses, skirts, and even loose city shorts in that same languid mood. She showed these in beige, gray, white or black and saved the blast of brights for her bold, brushstroke-printed, ankle-grazing dresses, skirts and off-the-shoulder tops.

Even Cornejo’s leather was fluid, with the lightness of silk, in a nude mid-calf pleated skirt, shown with one of her great-looking long pullovers in a hardy black cotton knit. Cornejo has a large, very cool cult following, evident in the crowd at her shows each season. She has a strong, unique signature and this season she presented her most cohesive show — without losing a bit of what has always made that signature so special.
