Huishan Zhang was visiting an acupuncturist when he came upon a recipe for a love potion in a book containing Chinese remedies that were thousands of years old. The potion contained ginseng flowers and Chinese angelica — two ingredients revered in Chinese culture — and it was the colors of their leaves, roots, flowers and berries that formed the basis of his spring palette: pale green, blush pink, scarlet and buttercup, cut through with bolts of black.
As always, lace played a big part in Zhang’s collection, but he used it in such a way that it didn’t get old. In one dress, he paired panels of lemon and mint lace, gave it a fluted organza hem and teamed it with a red lace cardigan that had white sleeves and a pearl trim.

There were nods to tuxedo dressing in a gorgeously romantic pale peach gown that had ruffles around the waist and on the front of the bodice, and in a sheer black shirt that had white lace and plissé panels down the front. Elsewhere, black broderie anglaise was embroidered with black and white sequins on an A-line coat and narrow pants, giving the look a Sixties air. In all, the offering sweetly sexy, with vampish touches that just served to broaden Zhang’s appeal.
