The spring lineup from nascent Indian label Miuniku, now in its third season, was based on an upbeat swimming-pool theme.
“It came about when we were moving house earlier this year and we found this very old video camera of ours, and the tapes were almost destroyed. When we played them, it was our vacation videos by the poolside and swimming,” said Tina Sutradhar, who designs the label with her sister Nikita.
A wave motif was used on color-blocked items that ranged from a scuba dress, featuring a panel that peeled away in front to reveal a zippered top, to a silk organza Windbreaker inspired by the jackets Olympic divers wear when out of the water. Other items were printed with words like “Cool Pool” and “Swim.”
Last May, Miuniku won a special jury award at the inaugural LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize, which includes mentoring from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton executives. Its designers have a strong sense for color and a bold way with cut. Given the correct guidance, they should be able to carve out a spot in the crowded contemporary field.
