Geoffrey Finch, Topshop’s creative design consultant, described his resort muse for Topshop Unique as having had “a nocturnal adventure” in Soho. “[It’s] such a magical part of London,” he said of the neighborhood, which has historically been the city’s creative hub. That touchstone translated into strong, clean silhouettes in eye-catching fabrics — at times with an Eighties “New Romantic” mood. A pant suit came in a structured crushed velvet, in shades of pink; Finch also crafted a bustier dress featuring tomboyish pockets out of the fabric. A pretty, dégradé floral print was used for a high-collared, silk georgette maxidress in pale beige, and Finch abstracted that pattern to embroider the flowers in beads onto a leather miniskirt.

But for all the modern shapes, there was also a sense of fun to the collection — via a full-length shearling coat in a micro-leopard print. “It’s a little bit Margot Tenenbaum; it’s a little bit something a Kray brother would have given,” said Finch, referring to the notorious British gangsters who were fixtures of Sixties Soho, usually alongside a string of glamorous women.
