Markus Lupfer mined the globe-trotting roots of resort for inspiration this season with a collection that riffed on sailors’ tattoos, navigation symbols, the night sky and seashells. He explained that he had wanted to take his nautical inspirations away from the commonplace sailor stripe — with the result being an array of fun fabrics: an organza embroidered in navy with anchors, swallows, hearts and stars that he worked into a sheer bomber jacket and a short-sleeved dress; a black-and-silver jacquard woven in the pattern of a starry sky; and an intricate print of sailors’ tattoos with images of galleons, pelicans, lobsters and sharks, which he used on silk pants.
The designer’s easy, youthful silhouettes acted as a foil to those rich details, with sleeveless jacquard dresses worn with sneakers and a sheer organza skirt paired with a slouchy knit sweater, emblazoned with “North, South, East, West” spelled out in sequins.
