Don’t let the handmade sweaters and bohemian sensibilities fool you — a nomad, Ulla Johnson is not. She is instead ultrafocused in growing her business and with a store opening in February, things seem to be expanding for the brand. Fashion-wise, “We are constantly looking into new shapes and techniques,” she said. For pre-fall, this was evident in the use of denim, which although not entirely new to Johnson (she is known for her love of American classics), she definitely explored it deeper. A denim dress, for example, was rendered in a fit-and-flare silhouette with voluminous sleeves and strategically placed seams that cinched the waist and amplified the hips. “I already had one made for myself,” she said. And that’s the thing about her pieces: they are made to be wanted and made to be worn.
Elsewhere, she offered delicately ruffled chiffon dresses, floral eyelet tops, oversized hand knits and knitted rabbit fur jackets, but she offset the girly factors with atypical tailoring and more sportswear-leaning pieces such as camel shrunken-wool cashmere peacoats, ribbed sweaters and relaxed suiting.
