“Sonia in Wonderland” was the concept for Sonia by Sonia Rykiel pre-fall, with the designers merging deck-of-cards references from “Alice in Wonderland” with classic Rykiel-isms. “They imagined my grandmother drinking Armagnac and playing poker,” said Lola Rykiel, Sonia’s granddaughter. “It was funny because that’s exactly what we used to do.” The collection was a charming mix of schoolgirl innocence à la Alice — a plaid dress with an embroidered white collar; a collegiate cardigan dress — and Rive Gauche free spirit — poplin shirts decorated with beaded safety pins; jeans with faux leather legs. In a Rykiel collection, stripes are never left behind, so there were T-shirts, knits and trompe l’oeil dresses that looked like two pieces. Nice puffer jackets in color-blocks felt very current, while a quilted navy velvet jacket and matching skirt played to girlish tradition.
