One of the three winners of this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, Jonathan Simkhai infused items inspired by staples from his own wardrobe with feminine desirability for pre-fall. “It all started with my closet,” he said during a preview. “Pants are men’s wear-inspired and I played a lot with shirting.” To that end, creative takes on the classic white men’s shirt included one style cut open in the back with multiple tied strings and another that was tiered and layered under a sweater. The tomboy play worked well, yet Simkhai didn’t abandon the flirtatious silhouettes, for which he’s known, updating his signature trumpet skirt with soft ruffles and working lace panels on tops and dresses.
