Walking the line between street and sophisticated is never easy, but designer Hiromichi Ochiai managed it with a breezy collection of androgynous looks — hard and soft-edged — in a dark and light palette. The guest designer at Giorgio Armani’s show space this season, Ochiai showed rough-edged denim wrap skirts paired with shirts — in mint, cobalt or white — with contrast whipstiching on the shoulders. Wide, floaty trousers took their cue from martial arts uniforms and were layered with long and breezy sleeveless cotton vests or loose-fitting knits. Ease and lightness also came in the form of pastel striped lab coats and matching shirts that were pleated and folded at the front. A hooded, pullover trench resembling a fisherman’s jacket was among the highlights of the collection, which Ochiai described as “picked up from the streets of Tokyo, with a lot of layering.”
