Sitting on the board of the Whitney Museum has many perks, so it’s no surprise that Pamella Roland was inspired by contemporary art this season, more specifically the works by Mark Rothko. She looked to Rothko’s use of rich jewel-tone colors as well as his play on texture and infused it into her collection. Luckily for Roland, these are the colors her customers gravitate toward. “My customers want opulence,” she said backstage. She delivered plenty of sexy bejeweled gowns and showed plenty of skin by playing with transparency, but in brushstroke patterns, adding depth and texture to each piece. Roland also took her signature silhouettes and added feather details, and worked rich velvet burnout on simple gowns with illusion panels. She also showed some bold outerwear pieces from a striped mink coat to a cashmere cape with a fox fur collar. Roland is also growing her separates business with bow blouses, leather leggings and a velvet pantsuit. Overall, the collection had the sexy bent that her customer craves, but it would be nice to see her develop beyond her comfort zone.
