It’s refreshing to see young designers stick to what they do best, and for fall, Lan Yu showcased a soft, feminine collection for her namesake label. Yu worked with soft colors, from pale shades of jade, pinks and ivory to a darker palette of deep greens and black plus a touch of gold. She showed plenty of anything-but-basic outerwear, from an effortless velvet lounge coat to a ladylike topper with an overlapped collar; most of the outerwear was worn over delicate lingerie pieces. For day, there were lace bomber jackets, a floral print over lace dress, ruffled trousers and an off-the-shoulder sweater dress. There were a few missteps, such as the corduroy and tweed pantsuit that seemed stiff and unflattering and the dated-looking mid-length mermaid dresses. For evening, the drama kicked up with a lace-embroidered bustier and tulle dress and a multicolored lace body hugging gown.
