Holly Fulton’s collection drew on two sources of inspiration: “The Badminton Game,” a slightly surreal painting by British artist David Inshaw, and the time she found herself at the snowy top of Cairn Gorm mountain in Scotland, wearing just a ratty old anorak, a silk skirt, and a pair of tights.
The bulbous topiary landscape and the colors of the painting inspired the deep chocolate and verdant olive greens in her palette, which also featured optic white, buttercup yellow, dusty pink and black, and the bell sleeves that appeared throughout on shirts and jackets.
A traditional Scottish paisley was Fulton’s key motif for the season. It was everywhere — appliqués, embroidered and jacquarded into a shimmery metallic fabric. It looked especially pretty as oversize black organza paisley-shaped petals applied to a sheer white dress, and in the coppery jacquard of a neat little parka with a huge teddy fur collar.
