Mother of Pearl creative director Amy Powney used retro florals and sporty silhouettes to create a collection that brought to mind grungy rebels dressing for a night at the country club.
Powney developed her own prints this season — retro wallpaper flowers or decorative interiors patterns — breaking from her usual artist collaborations. The first look, a mid-calf slip dress in numerous florals, worn with an oversized mannish navy coat, had the kind of thrift shop verve that defined the grunge era, while a candy pink crepe bow blouse was worn with matching track pants and a mannish check coat.
Pussy-bow blouses, skirts suits and wide-legged pants alternately read prissy or preppy. A navy coat with white scuba mesh cuffs and pocket panels was a reprieve from all the patterns. Coats in mixed leather looked clumsy.
