The ‘80s are certainly having a moment with emerging British designers right now, with NewGen recipient Joshua Ewusie putting his own spin on the power-dressing decade.
“This collection stems from a project I started during my Central Saint Martins MA studies,” he explained. “My mom has these cushions that have been in my family home ever since I can remember.”
One day, upon opening up these poufs, Ewusie found a treasure trove of his mother’s clothes from the ‘80s, when she first moved to London. Ever-inspired by powerful women, Ewusie spun those strong-shouldered silhouettes in traditional West African prints, jazzy sportswear, and early days Topshop and New Look garments into a colorful, sculptural collection.
Ewusie’s big on working with buttery leather. Building on last season’s woven leather set — which has been worn by Solange and Jourdan Dunn — Ewusie worked the technique into pencil skirts and an array of cool dresses.

“I was exploring what the Ewusie woman wears to conduct business and show up for herself. For me, it’s creating these very sculptural but defining clothes that give her confidence,” he said.
Rather than a presentation, the designer opted for a party. Guests, including singer Joy Crookes, Neneh Cherry’s daughter, Tyson McVey, and photographer Liz Johnson Artur, danced the night away in custom Ewusie looks.
