The sinking of the Titanic was considered one of the deadliest boating disasters of its time. During the passenger liner’s maiden voyage in 1912, the supposedly “unsinkable” ship plummeted into the icy cold Atlantic after it crashed into an iceberg. Of approximately 2,200 passengers on board, 1,500 perished.
James Cameron’s 1997 film, which won an Oscar for Best Picture and shattered box office records, led to a renewed interest in the Titanic disaster. “Titanic” also launched the careers of its two leading stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, catapulting them into stardom and cementing their spots in cinema history.
Over 100 years after its sinking, the Titanic is just as compelling to global audiences. A recent traveling exhibition about the ship saw thousands of visitors daily, while items from the ill-fated passenger liner have fetched millions at auction.
