Tina Knowles channeled the glamour of Elizabeth Taylor in a regal purple gown and emerald and diamond jewelry for the Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion event on Thursday in Beverly Hills.
The entrepreneur and “Matriarch” author wore a custom royal purple strapless gown with a sweetheart neckline, column skirt and added another skirt layer at the back for a voluminous, train element she designed in collaboration with Sarah Swann, creative director of Amsale. The gown complemented the color scheme elements for the event, including the purple carpet on which Knowles posed for photos.
The designer also matched her dress with long opera gloves, creating a sartorial monochrome effect. When it came to her jewelry, however, Knowles channeled Elizabeth Taylor’s penchant for luxurious pieces and extravagant design.

Knowles wore an emerald and diamond necklace with an emerald pendant, which coordinated and complemented her two statement rings and earrings. The jewels were slightly evocative of a particular suite that once belonged to Taylor, gifted to her by her husband and “Cleopatra” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” costar Richard Burton.
Taylor’s Bulgari emerald suite, with an estimated value of $23 million, featured an emerald brooch and teardrop earrings from the Italian luxury fashion and jewelry house. The brooch was eventually fastened to an even more extravagant necklace, featuring 16 Colombian emeralds set between diamond quatrefoils.
In 2011, Christie’s sold the suite at auction for the aforementioned $23 million.
The Elizabeth Taylor Night of Compassion event is the annual gala for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Hosted by TV personality Melvin Robert, the gala honored Knowles as the recipient of the Elizabeth Taylor Commitment to End AIDS Award. Philanthropist and secretary of the board of directors for the Magic Johnson Foundation, Cookie Johnson was named this year’s Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation champion.
