Oscar de la Renta launched its largest resale and vintage drop on Wednesday, which is available on its Encore resale site powered by Archive. The drop includes a replica of Sarah Jessica Parker’s 2014 Met Gala dress, along with 50 pieces commissioned from a longtime Oscar de la Renta collector.
For the 2014 Met Gala, Oscar de la Renta custom-designed a gown for Parker with a black bodice that flowed into a petal-like pattern at the top of a voluminous white skirt with a sweeping train that had a black-and-white check pattern on the back of the skirt. On the tail end of the train was “Oscar de la Renta” embroidered with red thread. The gown was accessorized with crystal-encrusted white opera gloves.
“When Sarah Jessica came to the office for our first design meeting, she had a binder full of references to share with Oscar,” said Oscar de la Renta’s current co-creative director Fernando Garcia in a statement. “It was truly a special collaboration, and for me, who didn’t ever go to design school, it was the biggest fashion lesson I could have gotten — on the floor of Oscar’s office.” Garcia was an intern for Oscar de la Renta at the time.

Parker was one of Oscar de la Renta’s biggest fans and most regular celebrity clients, often wearing his gowns and dresses for red carpet appearances. The brand was even featured and worn by her among other characters in the “Sex and the City” franchise, where Parker plays Carrie Bradshaw, one of her best-known and longest-running roles.
This commissioned piece included in the resale was made custom for the Oscar de la Renta collector and took 224 hours to make. Nine years later, the gown was returned to the atelier where it was made for restoration to its original condition. Thirty percent of proceeds from the sale of this dress will benefit the New York Public Library. Bidding for the dress will start at $7,500.
Parker’s dress was one of the last gowns he showcased on the Met Gala red carpet before de la Renta away in October 2014, five months after the event.
Oscar de la Renta launched its resale site Encore in partnership with Archive in 2021.
“We’ve been powering Oscar de la Renta’s custom resale experience for more than two years now and we’re extremely proud to continue evolving our partnership through this latest drop of vintage dresses sourced exclusively from the closet of an avid collector,” said Emily Gittins, chief executive officer and cofounder of Archive, to WWD. “The fact that the brand is leveraging our auction functionality for the second time — this time to auction a replica of SJP’s iconic 2014 Met Gala dress with a portion of the proceeds going to charity — makes this program especially unique and exciting.”
