Traditional Weatherwear to Open First Stand-Alone Store in London

LONDON — Traditional Weatherwear, a label under Japanese-owned Mackintosh, will open its first store in London in May.

Located at 8 Newburgh Street in London’s busy Carnaby Street neighborhood, the 700 square-foot store will span two floors and will carry men’s and women’s spring 2016 apparel, outerwear and accessories. The London flagship is the only store outside of Japan that will stock the full collection.

For the interiors, the brand commissioned Smallclone Co. Ltd., which used a neutral color palette for the store along with wood countertops, floorboards and polished chrome fixtures.

Japanese company Yagi Tsusho Limited purchased Mackintosh in 2007. Mackintosh launched a sister line, Traditional Weatherwear, in 2007.

Japan is a top market for the label, with the U.K. having “lots of potential,” said merchandising director Ted Seimiya, with bestsellers including quilted jackets and raincoats.

“Newburgh Street was chosen for its central London location and unique mix of retailers,” Seimiya told WWD. “The area attracts a mix of young creatives, tourists and media-savvy locals.”
