GLASS ACT: French American designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen is gearing up to unveil the Continental Collection — a series of glass and silver-plated breakfast tableware that conjures the spirit of a quaint European breakfast.
The New York-based designer, known for her unexpected sculpted objects inspired by nature and all its forms, launched her studio in 2019. Inspired by antiques like cobalt glass, Egyptian glass ewers and hotel breakfast sets and mid-20th-century Italian glassware, Jacobsen came up with the Continental Collection. It includes a preserves jar, a silver-plated toast rack, an espresso cup, a tea cup and a fruit bowl and more. A container named the Apple Jar is the heart of the collection — a recreation of a spray-painted glass sugar jar from Jacobsen’s childhood. Rituals accented with decorative objects create defining everyday moments, she reflected.
“Growing up, my father always set the table the night before, and that small act of preparation became a comforting ritual of home, habit and safety. I wanted to create objects that could encourage similar habits — objects that help us make memories,” she said.
