Tom Sachs‘ intentionally “boring” General Purpose shoe has been released in several colorways since Nike resumed its relationship with the artist, but one edition that surfaced in 2022 had yet to show any signs of hitting the market until now.
The Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose shoe “Bricolage” ends a long wait for the white sneaker with yellow, green and black accents. Named for the process of creating artwork with disparate materials, often improvisational, the shoe sees its upper rendered primarily in white mesh and gray suede. The Swoosh stands out in yellow, while the tongue and heel pulls, as well as a lace cover, make use of pine green nylon ribbon. Black is finally used for the mustache, laces and outsole.
On the surface, there’s nothing immediately thrilling about this colorway — but that’s been the point of the General Purpose shoe’s entire run. The introduction of the sneaker in 2022 came with a campaign proudly proclaiming it “boring.” Text in the style of older, more verbose advertising went on to say: “It took us 10 years to make a sneaker this simple, as simple as can be and no simpler. A do-more sneaker. An own-less sneaker. A show-up, prove-it, whole-life, be-you sneaker.”
