Nike’s Air Max Video Game Sneaker Tribute Series Moves to Its Biggest Icon Yet: ‘Goldeneye 007’

The latest Air Max 1 Low Poly is inspired by the N64 game's "Big Head Mode" cheat.

Nike’s Air Max 1 Low Poly has taken inspiration from two classic video game franchises in “Donkey Kong” and “Tomb Raider” in quick succession this year, and now the digitally-oriented sneaker is looking to its most iconic source material yet: “Goldeneye 007.”

The Nike Air Max 1 Low Poly “Big Head Mode” is modeled after the beloved 1997 Nintendo 64 game, more specifically the cheat code that gives the sneaker its name. And before coming to the real world, the shoe has already made its debut as a cosmetic on “Fortnite.”

Black, white and grey form the majority of the Air Max 1 Low Poly’s latest edition, while gold is top-loaded on the reengineered tongue with extra padding, as well as the laces and tiny Swoosh on the toe tip. A metal tread print is used for the insole and hosts a target reticule, while the inner tongue hosts a graphic mimicking ESRB’s rating labels. On the mustache you’ll find the red and blue icon that appears when your player is taking damage.

This arrangement can be seen as a loose interpretation of James Bond’s player model in the game, as the neutral tones represent his garb and the gold his big head. Alternatively, the greyscale could stand in for Bond’s tux and the gold invokes the game’s fabled Golden Gun.

“Big Head Mode” is exactly what it sounds like, a novelty cheat code that gives all the characters in the game gigantic domes.

Nike debuted the Air Max 1 Low Poly last year with its pixelated detailing serving as a callback to 3D modeling from the earlier days of video games. The sneaker first released as a remix of the original “University Red” colorway before getting the two other unofficial video game tributes this year, as the “Tomb Raider” version already released and the “Donkey Kong” pair is just days away.

The Nike Air Max 1 Low Poly “Big Head Mode” will release April 7 through a pre-order on Snkrs app, and .Swoosh membership will be required to purchase. Pricing is set at $160.
