If there’s one influence quietly shaping popular culture, it’s the American West. An unavoidable, intensified fascination with all things Western has emerged from coast to coast — and with it, a renewed admiration for the American cowboy.
The cowboy, an enduring symbol of rugged individualism and unapologetic self-determination, has undergone a significant rise in its portrayal throughout American pop culture, seen everywhere from high-fashion collections to televised melodramas and Western-inspired music. Perhaps the cowboy is top of mind because we need their example now more than ever.
In recent years, we’ve been thrust into an increasingly technology-driven world, where it’s become harder to forge meaningful connections and nurture our communities. Whenever we are faced with change and uncertainty, we tend to reach for that which feels timeless and true. Our growing kinship with the cowboy has revealed a deep, unspoken longing within us to feel something real and to live a simple, honest way of life. For many, forging that new and different path feels like a quiet act of rebellion.
“It’s rebellious to live with courage by cowboy ethics, rebellious to earn everything and expect nothing, rebellious to pioneer a different path in life,” says Isha Nicole, senior vice president of marketing and creative at Boot Barn. “There’s a yearning in society right now to defy the status quo and who better to give us inspiration than America’s original outlaw?”
While most shield themselves with the glare of screens, the cowboy stares defiantly at the sun rising over the mountains. Their rough, calloused hands guide their horse in the watery dawn light, navigating the land without roads or maps. With jeans caked in mud and a sweat-soaked brow, they set their mind to their work with a cast-iron resolve. The cowboy rests when they earn it. Their day is finished only when their responsibilities are fulfilled.
The noble attributes we admire in the cowboy go far deeper than a relentless work ethic. The cowboy shakes hands with a firm, assured grip and opens their homes to strangers. They stay awake for 24 hours straight to make sure a newborn calf is healthy or show up in the dead of night to fix a neighbor’s power. The cowboy shows us that rebellion against the norm can be humble rather than brash. They teach us that through acts of service, we can rediscover purpose. Through dedication and effort, we can find greater meaning.
The rebellious soul of the cowboy has been celebrated at Boot Barn since 1978, with a guiding mission to offer everyone a piece of the American spirit, one handshake at a time. This month, Boot Barn — now the largest Western and workwear retailer in the nation — is set to open their 500th store, a mark of their support for the American cowboy and a milestone that highlights America’s allure to the cowboy’s powerful influence.
As the West continues to captivate the nation, it’s not just cowboy values that we’re seeking to emulate, but the entire cowboy way of life. In increasing numbers, Americans are trading skyscrapers for wide open plains, embracing rural living and the spirit of self-reliance that has always defined the cowboy. Like a seat by the fire on a bitterly cold night, reconnecting with the land and our heritage can be a comforting return to self and a shelter from the demands of modern life.
The cowboy holds such a widespread, universal appeal for us in part due to their attainability. Cowboy values may be aspirational, but they’re never out of reach. Core tenets of honesty, humility and courage are achievable for anyone willing to live them, not just those who are preserving a traditional cowboy lifestyle in America’s heartland.
“The way of the cowboy is for everyone,” said Nicole. “Anyone can lend a hand to those in need. Anyone can be a tool of service for their community. No matter where we are, we can each work to honor cowboy values of grit and perseverance in our everyday lives.”
The grip that the cowboy holds on our country’s collective imagination is only continuing to grow stronger. In the cowboy, we see our better selves reflected back: steadfast, grounded and guided by a silent integrity that outlasts any trend. Through all today’s noise and bluster, the cowboy is that steady figure on the horizon, reminding us of who we once were and who we can still be.
