Getting a jump on the new season, Club Monaco showed its spring presentation on Tuesday.
Nautical and outdoorsy themes prevailed, with no shortage of sailor stripes and peacoats. The company has found that its customer is over overtly girly embellishments, so this time, Caroline Belhumeur, senior vice president of women’s and technical design, made sure that shine was understated — a little sparkle in subtle sequins here and there — with an emphasis on sweatshirts and chunky sweaters with leather details. Outerwear included trenches, also trimmed in leather, and motorcycle jackets done in silk and paired with scarf-printed silk dresses for a sporty-feminine balance.
For the men’s lineup, spring is shaping up to be more elegant and sophisticated without losing sight of its primary customer. Aaron Levine, the new vice president of men’s design, said the idea was to offer “cool stuff that guys from any walk of life can wear.” As such, the collection offered nubby shawl-collar sweaters, waxed cotton jackets, unlined blazers, distressed oxford shirts and khakis. Crinkled plaid sport shirts and an overdyed denim peacoat were also standouts.
