NEW YORK — The Waldorf-Astoria’s holiday finery couldn’t disguise the Missonis’ table at the luncheon on Tuesday for Mount Sinai Medical Center here.
Giocomo Missoni’s striped orange sweater made his family easy to find in the mostly female crowd. He joined his father, Vittorio, aunt Angela and cousin Margherita at the benefit, which included a Missoni fashion show. But Vittorio Missoni insisted his family was not given a Missoni-only dress code.
“Giocomo told me, ‘I’ll be very chic,’ and then he asked me, ‘Do you like my sweater?'” Vittorio Missoni laughed.
“They try to show their independence by how they dress. That’s something they have done since they were little,” Angela Missoni chimed in.
Still, they remain devoted to the brand. Margherita, after all, appears in Missoni’s advertising campaign. Others at the luncheon also turned out in Missoni’s signature striped knitwear.
But the runway show, made possible with the help of Saks Fifth Avenue and benefiting Mount Sinai’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, featured Missoni summer styles, including glittery evening gowns, bikinis, printed dresses and separates.
“This is a nice opportunity but it is also a pleasure to do something special.” Vittorio Missoni said. “We don’t do many fashion shows in the U.S. but we try to have a charity event when we can.”
Marjorie Raien, Jennifer Creel, Aerin Lauder, Jane Lauder, Susan Fales-Hill and Fiona Howe Rudin were among the 650 guests who caught the show.
