Laura Brachfeld Parlaghy credits her rebellious spirit to being a native New Yorker. “You have to be tough,” she said. “You have to deal with a lot of crap every day.” That attitude is obvious in the design of her new handbag collection under the label Brachfeld Parlaghy, which she launched for fall.
The look is tough yet sophisticated with an emphasis on hardware and strappy details. “I’m really inspired by bondage details,” said Brachfeld Parlaghy, who studied art and sculpture at Cornell but found fashion a more relatable field. “And I’ve done a lot of research on armor and warrior dress. I’m obsessed with ‘Game of Thrones.’” Her collection, which is produced in New York and South Korea, includes nine styles, many of them with robust, utilitarian pockets, braiding effects and harnesslike straps that can be worn multiple ways. Most are done in black or brown leather, although a black-and-white canvas ikat print will be introduced for spring.

This isn’t Brachfeld Parlaghy’s first time designing. From 1999 to 2007, she helmed another handbag line called Fondrie, which was sold at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. She closed the collection in order to travel and consult, and spent the last two years researching leathers and production in preparation of launching Brachfeld Parlaghy. As of now, the collection is sold at Ssense.com and Shopbop.com, retailing from $700 to $1,500.
