Gant has become a multi-cultural fashion hybrid – but that’s always been its strength, according to Gant chairman Lennart Björk. The preppy look in the U.S. “is based on Anglo-Saxon influences plus all those ethnic groups. It can be much wilder,” he said. To be sure, designer Brian Rennie didn’t shy from heady color and humor in a men’s collection strong on surf-side sportswear and witty tailored items such as a blue-and-white checked sports jacket, the seams inset with a slightly larger check. The women’s collection was less focused, but the printed cotton shifts and separates had a Lilly Pulitzer-like freshness. Other standouts included a high-rise two-piece bathing suit and jersey jumpsuits and gowns for relaxed summer evenings.
