Macy’s is taking its annual Fourth of July Fireworks celebration back to the East River.
Last year, Macy’s fireworks were set off on the Hudson River enabling viewers from Manhattan and New Jersey to get the best views. But this year, Macy’s will ignite the fireworks from the Brooklyn Bridge and from four surrounding barges in the East River in the Seaport District, giving those in Brooklyn and Manhattan the best viewing opportunities.
The last time Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks were set off in the East River was 2023. But the show, which always includes top singing performances, has moved from river to river depending on the year. For most of its 49-year history, the fireworks were held on the East River until 2009 when it was on the Hudson River to recognize explorer Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York. For a few years, the fireworks stayed on the Hudson River, until returning to the East River in 2014 after citizens of the boroughs pressured the city and Macy’s to return the fireworks show to the East River. In addition, Macy’s has launched its fireworks from different points along the East River, such as between 23rd and 40th Streets, or on other occasions at the Brooklyn Bridge.
“Macy’s doesn’t just light up the sky — we ignite a shared tradition,” Will Coss, Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks executive producer, said in a statement Wednesday.

The 10-year agreement includes broadcast and streaming rights to a Macy’s Parade-eve special and a new special program to be announced. The retailer expects to build audiences for these events, which are designed and created by Macy’s Studios.
