MONTREAL — Harry Rosen is expanding its offerings with the addition of a Tom Ford shop at its Cour Mont Royal store here.
There are 15 Harry Rosen stores across Canada, but Tom Ford is carried in only three, including its Bloor Street flagship in Toronto and its downtown Calgary unit.
“We’ve…been told [by Tom Ford] that our Bloor Street store is one of the most successful Tom Ford shops-within-a-shop in the world and among their most successful made-to-measure businesses, as well,” said Larry Rosen, chief executive officer and son of company founder Harry Rosen.
“It’s…not the type of line you can put in every store or every market,” he said. “It’s more for sophisticated urban centers rather than suburban markets.”
Harry Rosen has also added Brunello Cucinelli to its downtown Calgary and Toronto stores after the recent expansion of its Calgary flagship from 18,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet in a new location. It also opened an 8,000-square-foot Chinook Center store in suburban Calgary.

Like most retailers, Harry Rosen was hit by the recession, but not as severely as stores in the U.S. “We’re not reeling from the shock,” Larry Rosen said. “We had a more modest decline and we’re back to the numbers we had in 2008.”
He expects modest growth for the fourth quarter and slight gains in 2011.
“The U.S. market is still hurting, which affects Canada as a whole,” he said. “Tourism, which generates between 10 to 15 percent of our downtown store sales, is also down. And with the higher Canadian dollar, we expect that figure to drop next year.”
