At the Toronto-based Hudson’s Bay, mittens are a hot accessory and it’s no wonder considering the Canadian climate and the connection to Canada’s Olympic athletes.
Hudson’s Bay has launched the 7th edition of its “red mitten” to support Olympic athletes through the Canadian Olympic Foundation. “Hudson’s Bay is proud to have raised more than $28 million for the Canadian Olympic Foundation, funnelling much-needed funds to our athletes and the Canadian sport system,” said Liz Rodbell, president of Hudson’s Bay.
Rodbell also said that Shannon Szabados, Marie-Philip Poulin and Caroline Ouellette have become “the official 7th edition red mitten ambassadors.” The three have all been to multiple Olympic Games and between them, have eight gold medals.
Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee and chairman of the Canadian Olympic Foundation, noted that funds from the mittens “will help our next generation of Olympians achieve their own Olympic dreams.”

The latest Red Mitten design builds on its color block theme seen from season to season. Red, white, black and gray are the dominant colors, with the tweed yarn complementing the palette. The mittens show the traditional maple leaf, an embroidered Canada font on the palm and an athletic-inspired bold white border to finish the cuff. The mittens retail for $12 and 30 percent of the sales go towards the Canadian Olympic Foundation. Most of the $28 million was raised through the sale of the mittens over the last six years, though sunglasses sold for a few seasons contributed a small amount.
