As some of the U.S.’s largest retailers add seasonal jobs to bolster the ranks of their sales force this holiday, there’s a good chance the part-time jobs will convert to full-time positions.
And when it comes to the states with the highest-paying retail jobs, forget New York or California. Washington, Alaska and North Dakota are tops, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Over the past week, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp., Kohl’s Corp. and Macy’s Inc. announced plans to hire seasonal sales associates, and will collectively add about 284,000 seasonal jobs this year. About 40 percent of retailers who hire seasonal workers end up converting those positions to full-time jobs, according to Aon Consulting.
If workers stick it out, these full-time jobs offer salaries that are on par with other sectors. In a National Retail Federation Foundation report on wages, the researchers said “full-time retail workers between [the ages of] 25 and 54 make an average of $3,198 per month, slightly higher than the $3,164 earned by nonretail workers. Compared to other industries, retail has a higher percentage of workers aged 35 to 54 who make between $4,000 and $6,000 per month.”

Many of the younger, less experienced workers will earn less. Still, average annual retail salaries can range between $26,000 and $28,000 a year. Ranked by average annual salary, Washington is number-one at $28,920 while North Dakota takes the number-two spot with $28,210. Alaska’s is third with $27,080. Colorado, Nevada and Vermont all tie with $27,040 per year. It is important to note that the cost of living in some of these states are higher than others.
