The spirit of the late Dr. Fredric Brandt will live on at the University of Miami, the institution where he completed his residency and trained the next generation of dermatologists on the latest techniques and innovations in the field.

Dr. Brandt Skin Care has named Dr. Antonella Tosti, a recognized expert of hair and nail diseases, as the first Fredric Brandt endowed professor at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami.

The official event will be held Friday, Feb. 17 at the University of Miami Life Science and Technology Park.

“Collaborating with the University of Miami is exciting and makes sense for our first partnership,” explained Stephane Colleu, president and chief executive officer for Dr. Brandt Skin Care.

He said the Dr. Brandt Foundation is donating $1 million to the university’s Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery. It is thought to be the first of its kind in the industry honoring an industry leader with an endowment. Colleu said it will provide an opportunity to further Dr. Brandt’s legacy in teaching, skin-care innovation and technological antiaging research.

What’s unique is that the clinical studies it supports are in the areas of nail and hair — outside of Dr. Brandt’s Skin Care’s core business. Colleu didn’t rule out further expansion for the brand in those specialties. “This could lead to amazing innovations that could be launched in retail and we hope to pursue this direction.

Tosti is an internationally recognized expert and author of nearly 700 scientific papers. She developed dermoscopy for the diagnosis and follow-up of disease of the hair. Over the last 15 years, she has organized symposia at some of the most important Dermatological conferences (including the American Academy of Dermatology and the World Congress of Dermatology) on dermoscopy and the treatment of diseases of the hair and nails. Tosti is also the director and cofounder of an annual course for the treatment of hair, nails and cosmetology in Capri.

Her visibility will help get new research published to showcase the work that was so important to Dr. Brandt, Colleu said.
