Always one to push the envelope, Hourglass founder and chief executive Carisa Janes didn’t want the same-old same-old for her new eye shadow palettes. Instead of each shade in its own tin, Janes wanted one tin with five shades in five different formulas sandwiched together into a three-dimensional design. To achieve that, Janes started with two cream-based formulas, then tweaked until she had five shades with different finishes, from matte to shimmer to pearl. For the final product, each is formed into a mini cake, then all five are dropped into a pan, side by side. Working with a 3-D modeler, Janes and her team developed a custom tool—which must be recalibrated after every 1,000 pieces—to softly press the palette into a three-dimensional ridged design. While most palettes take two seconds to create from start to finish, this one takes two minutes. Painstaking, yes, but oh-so pretty.
