Strong Looks at Dolce & Gabbana

“I love that everyone’s breaking the rules,” exclaimed Pat McGrath, backstage at the Dolce & Gabbana show. The makeup artist was talking about how for next spring designers were willing to turn the tables on traditional summer makeup looks.

In place of dewy skin, glossy lips and barely made-up eyes, there was matte skin, strong lipstick and plenty of smoky eyes. “Lately there’s been no fear in makeup,” she said, adding “it’s been very strong looks for spring.”

Case in point: Dolce & Gabbana, where McGrath painted a rich and dark burgundy matte lipstick on the mouth, and blended a shimmering, smoky mauve eye using two pigments that were slightly different colors. Foundation pulled together what McGrath described as “perfect skin.” She finished the look with some shimmer stick on the brow bones and cheekbones.
