NEW YORK — Niche fragrance marketer Hierbas de Ibiza has created a solid version of its existing eau de cologne, a new beeswax-based formulation called Colonia Solida, which is set to make its debut this fall.
The scent’s olfactory composition features notes of lemon and orange peel, thyme, sage, lavender, jasmine and orange blossom. Aside from beeswax, the solid scent contains raspberry oil to prevent melting and a corn derivative to make the formulation nongreasy.
“The solid cologne will be a very limited-edition [fragrance] for the collection,” said Antonio Torres Sagrera, who heads operations for Hierbas de Ibiza, which is based in San Lorenzo, a small village on the Spanish island’s countryside. He noted that a mere 150 pieces will initially be produced for worldwide distribution and the objects will be priced at $375 each.
Torres Sagrera’s father, Antonio Torres Roig, who is a retired jeweler from Barcelona, created the round, solid sterling silver box that holds the fragrance. On the lid is a coin featuring the face of Tanit, the chief goddess of Carthage, the ancient North African city settled by the Phoenicians.
“The presentation is his design,” Torres Sagrera said of his father’s silver work. Torres Sagrera’s sister, Isabel Torres Sagrera, designed the graphics — silver curving leaves and vines — on the cologne’s blue-and-white outer packaging.
In the U.S., the solid scent will be launched at Aedes de Venustas here and at six Barneys New York locations in late November. The Hierbas de Ibiza brand is expected to enter three more Barneys locations by next year. Internationally, Colonia Solida will be introduced in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the U.K. and Japan for a total of 25 global doors.
Hierbas de Ibiza, which was originally launched in 1997 and made its U.S. debut at Aedes de Venustas in 2003, will comprise an assortment of six products with the addition of the solid scent.
Existing items include a cologne spray, 3.4 oz. for $80, and a cologne splash, 6.8 oz. for $120. There’s also bath salt, 17.6 oz. for $56; body cream, 10.1 oz. for $35, and a set of two soaps for $20. All the items employ the olfactory blend found in the solid cologne.
