Melrose versus Rodeo was the theme backstage at Badgley Mischka this season.
“The Rodeo Drive [look] is a bit more va-va-voom, a bit more volume, and the Melrose is a bit cooler, a bit more laid-back,” said Peter Gray, who oversaw hair for Cutler Salon and Redken. For hair, Gray created two looks, both intended to be an “antidote to that L.A. set that you don’t brush out,” he said. He painted gel onto the hair at the root and then rough blow-dried it, with Redken No 7 Mousse through each section for volume. Hair was curled with a 1.25-inch curling iron and set before being thoroughly brushed out. In the end, the Melrose look was “more collapsed” than the Rodeo-inspired look, Gray said. The look was finished with Redken Wind Blown spray for soft texture.
On the face, Alice Lane for Inglot created a “winter, graceful beauty” look with Lauren Bacall-inspired brows and velvet-looking lips. She prepped skin with Kat Burki Vitamin C Cream before buffing on Inglot AMC Foundation and Freedom System HD Highlight Trio in 103 and 101 for a glow. The highlighter was spread onto cheekbones and the bridge of the nose for a natural-looking contoured effect, while magenta blush in 69 was spread across cheeks.
For the eye, Lane used Inglot Freedom System Eye Shadows in 08 and 399, a fawn/taupe shade, with High Gloss Lip Oil in 01 in the center of the lid. She also used Kohl Pencil in a nude, 05, on the waterline, and brushed brows upwards with Brow Shaping Mascara. Lips, inspired by velvet slippers, were a deep burgundy created in layers. Lane started with Soft Precision Lip Liner in 61, with Lipstick in 295 with Eyeshadow in 450 pressed on top for a fabriclike effect. For some of the girls wearing more athletic clothing, Lane then wiped off the lipstick — leaving a lighter stain. “I wanted them to look like pillows or velvet slippers, so it’s a burgundy lipstick with eyeshadow pressed in to the top to make it matte,” she said.
For the nails, Deborah Lippmann created two looks — one, a short rounded gray nail using Black Magic Woman, which launches this fall. The other was a short, rounded nail with a thin strip of Lady Is a Tramp, a red, at the tip.
