Backstage at Prabal Gurung Fall 2017

The beauty look was inspired by a strong woman.

Backstage at Prabal Gurung was apparently so hectic that reporters weren’t allowed in.

Nonetheless, some of the beauty masterminds made their way to through the corral of reporters waiting in the foyer of Gallery One at Skylight Clarkson Square to talk about the beauty look — which centered around a strong woman.

“The look that we’re doing this year at Prabal is completely the opposite of what we did last season…it’s a very strong, very androgynous, masculine, powerful…hairstyle,” said Anthony Turner, who led hair for Wella. He crafted a “strict ponytail” by using Wella’s Salt Lift throughout the hair before blow drying. Then, he pulled Texture Touch Wax, a men’s product, through the hair and secured it in the back of the head with an elastic, parting the hair far to the side — above the arch of models’ brows. “The reason I do it so low is that I think that feels more masculine,” Turner said. Then, Turner went through the ponytail with a one-inch Hot Tools curling iron to created a tousled, messy texture, he said. “What I like about that is you feel like there’s a woman in there still,” he said. Girls with short hair wore it with a deep side part — those with bobs had their hair tucked behind the ears.

Diane Kendal led the makeup look for MAC, which centered around a graphic eye. “It’s about a really strong, empowered woman — someone who is doing it all on their own,” said Ashley Rudder, global senior makeup artist for MAC. “The collection…has lots of prints, lots of beautiful colors…they used some of that color wave to create this floating, negative space statement piece on the eye.” Artists used Next to Nothing face color, buffed into skin with a 1405 brush. For the eyes, models sported pops of Chroma Cakes color in an almost bridge-like shape that extended beyond the outer corner of the eye. The eye color spectrum ran from High Def Cyan to Marine Ultra to Genuine Orange to True Chartreuse and Landscape Green. Cheeks were brushed with Fleur Power Powder Blush, and lips were coated in Lip Conditioner.

Jin Soon crafted a simple, half-dipped nail, also inspired by negative space. The colors stayed neutral — Jin Soon’s Grace, Toff, or a not-yet-released nude shade.

Skin expert Eileen Harcourt prepped models’ skin with Belif cleansing water, followed by Peat Miracle Revital Eye Cream and The True Cream Aqua Bomb.
