NEW YORK — Soludos, the seven-year-old New York-based footwear brand, is expanding beyond its signature quirky espadrilles and flat sandals.
This week the firm launched its first handbag collection. The line of summery straw totes and top-handle bags sell on the brand’s web site, soludos.com, and retail from $89 to $128. There are three silhouettes in the collections, including The Merida Cross Body, The Merida Basket Bag and The Merida Beach Tote.
“We’ve been getting requests from some of our top customers to expand in to bags,” said the company’s founder, Nick Brown. “We wanted to design a handbag collection that reflects the spirit of Soludos, uses natural materials, and can travel beautifully with you — i.e., easily pack in to luggage or effortlessly carry on to the plane. These handbags are meant to transition between city, beach, music festival, Mediterranean vacation, etc., as well as be multifunctional.”
The bags are handwoven palm by five artisan communities in Mexico, with each one taking between one to two days to create.

Soludos’ footwear for women, men and children is sold through various retailers, including Nordstrom, Amazon and Zappos, but there are no plans at this time to wholesale the handbags. “We are excited to expand into accessories but want to walk before we run,” said Brown.
In order to support the launch on social media, Soludos worked with several influencers to post organically as an ad campaign featuring Sincerely Jules’ Julie Sariñana, who has 4.6 million Instagram followers.
