It was all about transformation for Bishme R. Cromartie.
The Baltimore-based designer, who said he’s considering a relocation to Los Angeles, said he finally feels as though he’s come into his own when it comes to his fashion label. He wanted his spring 2018 collection to reflect that.
“I’m in the process of things changing for me,” the designer said of his challenge to get his name and line out. “I’ve seen how the butterfly goes through a process from the egg to the caterpillar to the chrysalis to the butterfly and I feel like I’m in the cocoon. A lot of things have been changing and transforming for me, and I wanted to use that inspiration in this collection.”
Cromartie said for the first time he played with sheer, glittery fabric. There’s also lace embellished with sequins, bright Neoprenes and hints of ostrich feathers.

The designer showed a dozen looks during L.A. Fashion Week, which he said reflected elevated cuts and an aesthetic that also mirrors coming into his own as a designer and not questioning it.
Cromartie said his line is for the confident girl who is either heading up a company or an event, or about to step into a leadership role.
“I love the girl who has confidence and can go into a room and take that attention effortlessly,” he said.
Much of his work is limited runs and custom pieces with his attention now turning to getting his online shop off the ground, which he hopes to have done by February.
