It was a little after midnight, which meant one thing at Rodarte’s after party: cake. The Mulleavy sisters take turns celebrating their birthdays each fashion week season, and Laura’s falls in September. Her sibling and codesigner, Kate, presented her with a Swiss chalet-themed confection, and she gamely blew out the candles. Nearby, Tavi Gevinson and Petra Collins cheered.
Rodarte’s party is always an intimate friends and family affair — though that’s not to say it doesn’t get raucous considering they’ve also been known to break out a limbo stick on occasion. This year, they gathered their cohorts on the roof of The Jane hotel, where Alex and Sofia Sanchez de Betak chatted with hairstylist Odile Gilbert, and Justin Theroux camped out in a corner wearing a sleeveless T-shirt. (He’s friendly with The Jane co-owner Carlos Quirarte, but no photos please.) The singer Miguel, who sat front row at the show, hovered near the bar, friendly but not quite in his right mind for an interview — or so he said. Even the designers were fairly tight-lipped. Perhaps they — rightfully — just wanted to enjoy their party. Or, as Kate said, echoing the thoughts of fashion editors everywhere: “I’m tired.”
