“It’s all about a burgundy lip.”
Though it’s no groundbreaking revelation for fall, this observation from makeup artist Erin Parsons is certainly one worth noting, given the number of shows this season highlighting the hue.
And Parsons is the originator of the trend, having sent Kendall Jenner down the runway last week sporting a dark burgundy lip at the La Perla show.
“The star of the season, I keep saying is [Maybelline] Midnight Merlot, this dark lipstick — I’ve used it on the eyes at other places it seems to be showing up at every show,” Parsons said. “I think I saw Yadim use it, too, somewhere.”
The show Parsons was referring to was Jonathan Simkhai, where Yadim paired a burgundy lip with tiny pearls and gemstones applied to the inner corners of the eye.

At Mara Hoffman, the makeup look keyed by Milk Makeup included two lip looks, one of which was a deep maroon color reminiscent of Nineties-era styles. “I wanted them to look like pillows or velvet slippers, so it’s a burgundy lipstick with eye shadow pressed in to the top to make it matte,” said makeup artist Alice Lane for Inglot.
Yadim for Maybelline at Philipp Plein also showcased an intense burgundy lip with a hi-gloss finish — there were also brighter red lips with the same glossy look.
The burgundy lip look is in stark contrast to the other key lip trend of the season — a natural, rose-pink tone as seen at Altuzarra and Thakoon.
